Camp Kara Deniz
(Istanbul, Turkey)

Period of Operation

1969? - 1975

Location

Located in the Belgrade Forest near the Black Sea, Camp Kara Deniz was approximately 20 minutes from U.S. Air Force facilities in the capital, Istanbul. Situated in one of the few heavily forested areas of Turkey, it also possessed a beautiful white sand beach nearby.

Facilities

Kara Deniz was a wilderness style camp. Troops brought their own tents, sleeping and personal gear. Cooking and dining was on a central mess basis. The camp was equipped with showers, a secure water supply, and boasted excellent scoutcraft facilities.

Program

A full array of aquatic and scout craft activities were available to participants. The camp was equipped to provide most outdoor advancement experiences – which for many area scouts was a unique opportunity. A highlight of the camp’s program was the chance to earn scouting’s one mile swim badge by swimming the Bosphorus Straits, which links Europe and Asia.
